Estos cuentos tempranos sobre diversos episodios y personajes de la guerra civil son un modelo de cómo abordar el presente en la ficción, pues frente a lo que suele afirmarse y el mismo Chaves Nogales declaró, se trata de narraciones en las que el autor parte de la realidad para componer unos textos que presentan significativas variantes con lo que sabemos que fue la Historia. Y a pesar de ello, lo significativo, aquello que ha hecho que el libro siga fresco tantos años después, es su ambición literaria y su independencia de juicio aún hoy.
These early stories about various episodes and characters of the civil war are a model of how to deal with the present in fiction, because compared to what is usually stated, and Chaves Nogales himself stated, these are stories in which the author starts from reality to compose texts that feature significant variations with what took place historically. And despite this, what is significant, what has made the book so fresh so many years after, is its literary ambition and its independence of judgment even today.
