Abstract

Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, women have played secondary roles, both from a health point of view and in literature. The scientific advances permitted the chronification of the syndrome, displacing the elaboration of the mourning for the loss of one’s life towards the unattainability of social ideals of corporality, health, femininity, motherhood. This work articulates the results obtained from the analysis of the interviews taken with women living with HIV/AIDS and some fragments of Marta Dillon’s Vivir con virus. Relatos de la vida cotidiana. This interdisciplinary crossing points out some differential characteristics between the public –and the journalistic– discourse, on one side, and the private one, on the other, within the limits of the clinical setting. The possibility of telling one’s history and building up a community, permits to counteract the isolation generated by the stigma that still surrounds the infection.
