Dystopian Geographies in Three Post-15M Graphic Novels. Galvañ, Bustos and Colo

Abstract

En este artículo ofrezco un análisis de las geografías distópicas de tres novelas gráficas posteriores a la crisis económica del año 2008: Hoy es un buen día para morir (Jesús Colomina Orgaz, 2016), Puerta de Luz (Luis Bustos, 2017) y Pulse enter para continuar (Ana Galvañ, 2018). El análisis del espacio-tiempo y el socioespacio de estos textos se integra en una discusión sobre la función cognitiva e ideológica del arte que toma en cuenta las aportaciones estético-literarias de Darko Suvin y Fredric Jameson y la tradición de la sociología emancipadora y el utopismo científico que arranca con Otto Neurath y llega hasta Erik Olin Wright y Peter Frase. El objetivo buscado es abogar por la utilidad de una crítica cultural que aproveche la sinergia entre ficción y ciencia que hace posible el poder de la imaginación.

In this article I propose an analysis of the dystopian geographies of three Spanish graphic novels published after the Great Recession –Hoy es un buen día para morir (Jesús Colomina Orgaz, 2016), Puerta de Luz (Luis Bustos, 2017) and Pulse enter para continuar (Ana Galvañ, 2018a). My analysis of the space-time and the social-space of these texts is integrated into a discussion on the cognitive and ideological function of art. This discussion takes into account both Darko Suvin’s and Fredric Jameson's aesthetic and literary contributions and the tradition of emancipatory sociology and scientific utopianism that starts with Otto Neurath and continues with authors like Erik Olin Wright and Peter Frase. My goal is to advocate a cultural critique that takes advantage of the synergy between fiction and science made possible by the power of the imagination.
