Abstract

In order to illustrate the anti-essentialist narrative that shapes the representation of what’s ‘local’ in the best tradition of Hispano-American literature since the beginning of the new century, Andrés Neuman employs the metaphor of the projection of an extra-terrestrial point of view “upon places which are theoretically domestic”. Provoking a dialogue at a crossroads between the tribute towards and the perversion of one of the most recognizable trademarks of the Boom generation, the construction of that imaginary Latin American microcosm which is Santa Teresa plays very discretely with some features of science fiction, employing them as opportunities to queer, twist and turn some traditional clichés about identity, without discarding them, but indeed filtering them through the demythologizing screen of a minor, heroically marginal genre. In order to analyse the ‘cable stitch’ Bolaño activates intertwining science fiction and reflexion upon the position of what’s peripherical within a global framework, my purpose in this paper is to use the valuable indications that can be spotted in the novel of his that is most explicitly related to the same genre, thus clarifying its implicit status in 2666El espíritu de la ciencia ficción.
