Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the role that the Detective Novel plays in Roberto Bolaño’s literature and particularly in 2666. The analysis focuses on the narrative and cultural reasons why, from our point of view, it is possible to always distinguish the genre in the Bolaño’s narrative. Our goal is to demonstrate that the Detective Novel does not only represent an aesthetic option (a sign of his fascination with the marginal literature), but also a fundamental topic of his work. In order to develop our analysis, we first establish a theoretical discourse about the genre (which starts from the ideas of Borges and then considers the approaches of Ricardo Piglia and Daniel Link), with the aim of rethink the critical approach to the genre. Second, thanks to proper studies about Roberto Bolaño’s literature and other works about biopolitics (from Agamben to the issue coordinated by Mabel Moraña and Ignacio Sánchez Prado, 2014), we aspire to detect the specific narrative function of the Crime Novel and its relation with the narrativization of evil. Finally, we will try to link Roberto Bolaño’s fiction with other Latin American authors and, particularly, from Central America. As Roberto Bolaño does, many authors from Latin America consider Crime Novel as a fundamental way to represent a reality related to post-traumatic stress disorder, political violence and drug trafficking.
