Novella and Short Novel, between Brevity and Narrativity: the History of an Unfaithfulness?

Abstract

Sobre los pilares de la propiedad narrativa y de la extensión textual así como sobre la relación efectiva entre esas dos características, se ha erigido primordialmente la historia del género de la nouvelle y de la novela corta y la de la relación existente entre ambas especies –con sus encuentros y desencuentros–, como ha ratificado la propia tradición de la crítica realizada en torno a ello hasta hoy. Según asegura J.-P. Blin, nadie duda de que la mayor parte de los relatos breves del siglo XX conquista al público gracias a una intriga de ritmo palpitante ni de que “la nouvelle et l’histoire font encore bon ménage”; sin embargo, el matrimonio no sería para siempre indisoluble, pues a esas alturas de la literatura el género ha incurrido en algunas “infidelidades”.

Based upon the pillars of brevity and narrativity as well as on the effective relationship between these two characteristics, history of the nouvelle and of the novela corta genres have emerged, in like manner as the history of the existing relationship between both of these short species –with their historical, generic and terminological agreements and disagreements. As J.-P. Blin points out, most of the short stories of the twentieth century captivates the public thanks to a thrilling intrigue and “la nouvelle et l’histoire font encore bon ménage”; nonetheless, this “marriage” does not appear to be indissoluble because, at this point in literature, this genre has sometimes been “unfaithful Normal 0 14 false false false IT X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 ”.
