Mimesis, Realism and Don Quijote. Observations on Auerbach and Spanish Literature

Abstract

Nel mese di maggio del 2012 Lorenzo Renzi e Donatella Pini hanno tenuto una lezione ciascuno su Auerbach per il Dottorato di Ricerca del Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Letterari dell’Università di Padova. Ognuno è stato presente mentre l’altro parlava. Poi Lorenzo Renzi ha steso il suo testo, di carattere più generale, e Donatella Pini ci ha inserito le sue osservazioni relative a Cervantes, alla storia e al significato del capitolo che Auerbach dedica al Chisciotte. Ci sono state in seguito nuove letture reciproche, interazioni e aggiunte da ambedue le parti. È nato così il dialogo scritto che i due autori, Donatella Pini e Lorenzo Renzi offrono ai lettori qui. All’inizio di ogni parte le sigle LR (Lorenzo Renzi) e DP (Donatella Pini) indicano l’autore. Donatella Pini e Lorenzo Renzi si conoscono da cinquant’anni. Questo è il primo lavoro che scrivono insieme, ma forse non l’ultimo. 

In May 2012 Lorenzo Renzi and Donatella Pini. Gave both a lecture on Auerbach to Phd students of the Department of “Studi Linguistici e Letterari” at the University of Padova; each scholar attended the lecture of the other. As a result of this, Lorenzo Renzi wrote his article, focusing on a more general subject, and Donatella Pini added her observations regarding Cervantes with particular attention to the history and the meaning of the chapter Auerbach dedicated to the spanish author. Afterwards, mutual readings, interactions and additions gave birth to the written dialogue the two authors present here. At the beginning of each paragraph the initials LR (Lorenzo Renzi) and DP(Donatella Pini) indicate the author of every single part. Donatella Pini and Lorenzo Renzi have known each other for fifty years. This is the first article they realize together, and perhaps not the last.
