Abstract

Among the great variety of symbols that characterize Zúñiga’s trilogy of the Spanish Civil War, the image of the cat, in its relation with the human being, reveals the deepest side of the instinctual life connected with love and eroticism. Symbol of passion and sensuality, in “10 de la noche, Cuartel del Conde Duque” the small beast interacts with the protagonists inside the Madrilenian barracks located in the city centre, an antinomic universe where the struggle between light and darkness, hot and cold, but also life and death takes place. The complex net of symbols which organizes the story specifies the theme of love as the element that the protagonists set against the brutality of the historical context in which they live.
