Cervantes, Don Quixote and Money

Abstract

Il tema del denaro viene ripercorso nel Quijote, comparato con altri testi cervantini o vicini a Cervantes, e commisurato al valore che esso rivestiva sia nella mentalità spagnola del Siglo de oro sia nel vissuto dello stesso Cervantes. Da un’analisi così condotta emerge la rilevanza dell’episodio della discesa di Don Chisciotte nella cueva de Montesinos e, in modo particolare, il prestito richiestogli da Dulcinea, dove il denaro si rivela fondamentale nel far capitolare il sogno cavalleresco di Don Chisciotte.

The topic of money is analyzed all through the Quixote and also in other literary works written both by Cervantes and his contemporaries; then, its function is studied in relation with the mentality of the Spanish Golden Age and the experience of Cervantes himself. The textual analysis brings out the significance of the episode of the Don Quixote’s descent in the cueva de Montesinos and focuses on the loan Dulcinea asks him for: here, money turns out to be fundamental in destroying the knightly dream nurtured by Don Quixote.
