Ninguna persona es una isla: the Meeting of Two Solitudes in the Laforet-Sender correspondence

Abstract

En 1965 Carmen Laforet conoció a Ramón J. Sender durante un viaje cultural que emprendió por Estados Unidos invitada por el Departamento de Estado norteamericano. El breve encuentro que los dos escritores entretuvieron en Los Ángeles, solicitado por la misma autora antes de su salida de la España franquista, marcó el comienzo de una larga y sólida amistad trabada al hilo de una correspondencia epistolar ininterrumpida durante más de diez años. Espacio de intercambio de evaluaciones y reflexiones literarias y, a la vez, ventana abierta hacia los más íntimos sentimientos, impresiones y temores de los dos corresponsales, el intercambio Sender-Laforet es un instrumento crítico de imprescindible interés para entender la vida y la obra de los dos autores. El presente artículo se propone explorar los temas de discusión que sobresalen en las más de setenta cartas recogidas en la edición de Israel Rolón Barada, con el objetivo final de acercarse a dos figuras eminentes de la España del siglo pasado no a través de la vía preferente, es decir adentrándose en sus obras, sino por medio de sus vivas voces, sumamente sugestivas y merecedoras de ser amplificadas. 

In 1965 Carmen Laforet first met Ramón J. Sender during a cultural trip she took through the United States, invited by the American Department of State. The brief encounter the two writers had in Los Angeles – whose inclusion in the travelling schedule had been requested by Laforet before her departure from Franco’s Spain – sanctioned the beginning of a long-lasting, close friendship developed through over ten years of written correspondence. A space for interchanging literary evaluations and reflections and, at the same time, an open window over the most intimate feelings, impressions and inquietudes of the two, the Sender-Laforet correspondence is a crucial critic instrument for understanding the life and work of both writers. This article will explore the most prominent topics discussed in the over seventy letters collected by Israel Rolón Barada in his edition of the interchange, with the ultimate aim of approaching two eminent figures of last century Spain not following the main path – that is to say, analyzing their work –, but instead through their own voices, utterly suggestive and thus deserving a further amplification.
