Trilce or the Utopia of Writing

Abstract

En Trilce – sin duda uno de los poemarios más rupturistas de la vanguardia latinoamericana – una variada serie de procedimientos pone de relieve la dimensión material de la palabra escrita, lo cual equivale a un desenmascaramiento de la transparencia sígnica y al consiguiente surgimiento de ese elemento heterogéneo respecto del sentido y la significación, ese componente semiótico del lenguaje, que Julia Kristeva refiere a la primera etapa de fusión del niño con la madre. La prevalencia del componente material de la palabra, el privilegio del significante sobre el significado, suponen la ruptura del signo, la suspensión del funcionamiento simbólico de la lengua, y el regreso – si no cronológico, al menos lógico – a un estadio anterior a la nominación, a la constitución del yo y a la instauración de la Ley del Padre. Este regreso – utópico – implicaría un atravesamiento del orden especular, esto es, un pasaje del otro lado del espejo en tanto instancia fundadora del cuerpo y de la subjetividad. 

In Trilce – certainly one of the most disconcerting poems of the Latin American avant-garde – a varied series of procedures highlights the material dimension of the written word, and contributes to the emergence of the semiotic language component, that heterogeneous element with respect to the meaning and significance, to which Julia Kristeva refers as the first stage of fusion of the child with the mother. The prevalence of the material component of the word, the privilege of the signifier over the signified, imply the rupture of the sign, the absence/exclusion of the symbolic function of language, and the return – if not chronological, at least logical – to a state prior to naming, to the constitution of the Self and to the establishment of the Father’s Law. This return – utopian – implies a crossing of the specular order, that is, a journey to the other side of the mirror as the founding instance of body and of subjectivity. If, as Michel de Certeau proposes, the possibility of configuration of space relies on the differentiation between the son and the mother’s body; if that first separation is the original “spatial structure”, Trilce is then proposed as a radical utopia, as utopia in the most literal sense of the word: the denial of space itself, the regression to the mother’s body.
