Abstract

Over recent years, an increased interest for rural themes, motifs and settings has developed within certain segments of the Argentinian cultural scene. There is a remarkable presence of a wide range of female writers interested in plotting new stories and instating alternative subjects within that traditional space, characterized so far by a male mystique that still carries strong ideological and symbolic burdens. Prompted by the fresh depiction of the countryside from the point of view of its female character, introduced by Matilde Sanchez in her novel El desperdicio (2008), I focus in this paper on the representation of rural spaces in its connection with the treatment of current issue of the kidnapping and trafficking of women, as examined in Argentine writer María Inés Krimer’s novel, La inauguración (2011). The main concern of this paper is to propose a reading of the text attentive to the ways in which female bodies are being represented, as transplanted and abused, and to the ways in which those bodies are circulated in that space – depicted as stifling and labyrinthine both during confinement and in theoutdoors.
