The Ultracontemporary Novel about the Spanish Civil War between Memory and Re-writing

Abstract

En la época contemporánea – setenta y cinco años después de acabada la guerra y a las cuatro décadas de la muerte de Francisco Franco – la omnipresencia del conflicto fratricida en el ámbito literario y – más en general, en el cultural – parece no solamente reconfirmada en su productividad, sino, si es posible, incluso incrementada. En el marco de un debate socio-político que de manera cada vez más difusa aprovecha cuestiones vinculadas con el conflicto como terreno de enfrentamiento y en un contexto de agotamiento progresivo de la memoria testimonial relativa al trienio bélico, se observa sobre todo en los últimos veinte años una generalizada tendencia a la reflexión memorialista o, por lo menos, a la temática del pasado no solamente entre los grandes nombres de la literatura española de nuestros tiempos, sino en una serie de productos culturales y mediáticos de muy amplia difusión y en ocasiones incluso de dudosa calidad artística. El artículo trata de sondear un tópico (trans)narrativo de evidente actualidad en la literatura española contemporánea, a saber, la evocación persistente de la guerra civil en la escritura de las generaciones segunda y tercera. Reflexionando alrededor del concepto de generación desde un punto de vista tanto sociológico como literario y deteniéndose específicamente en el análisis de la novela, el objetivo del estudio propuesto es matizar la compleja relación que la memoria traumatizada entretiene con los herederos de quienes asistieron a su acontecimiento fundador, con tal de evaluar la legitimidad perspectivista de quien escribe sobre memoria utilizando como fundamento de su narración un material que no es ‘de primera mano’. 

In contemporary times – seventy-five years after the end of the civil war and four decades after the death of Francisco Franco – the omnipresence of the fratricidal conflict in the literary and, more generally, cultural field in Spain seems not only reconfirmed in its productivity, but, if possible, even increased. In the framework of a socio-political debate which, in an ever-increasing way, uses the conflict as a ground for confrontation and in a context of progressive disappearance of the testimonial memory about the war-period of 1936-1939, especially in the last twenty years it is possible to observe a widespread tendency towards ‘memorialist’ reflection or, at least, to the theme of the past not only among the great names in Spanish contemporary literature, but also in a series of rather popular cultural and media products, sometimes characterized by a limited artistic quality. This article tries to tackle a (trans)narrative topic which is undoubtedly central to contemporary Spanish literature, namely the persistent evocation of the civil war in the writing of the second and third generations. Reflecting about the concept of generation from a sociological and literary perspective – with a specific focus on the analysis of the novel –, the goal of the study herein proposed is to clarify the complex relationship that traumatized memory entertains with the heirs of those who attended its founding event, with the aim of evaluating the legitimate status of the perspective brought along by those who write about memory using for their narrative a basic material that is not ‘first hand’.
