Translating Epistemic Verbs in a Corpus of Informative Texts: the Expression of the Speaker’s Voice

Abstract

Este trabajo se propone analizar cómo el procedimiento traductor de la modulación para la clase de marcadores modales constituida por los verbos epistémicos afecta a la equivalencia funcional del texto traducido. El análisis traductológico se ha desarrollado a partir de un corpus paralelo de textos divulgativos y quiere mostrar en qué medida la modulación puede alterar la expresión de la voz del enunciador modificando la inscripción de otros agentes involucrados en el acto comunicativo. Se intenta observar si estos cambios, al modificar el vínculo textual que se instaura entre los interlocutores y la información que se quiere transmitir, altera también la función textual de los segmentos en los que aparecen. 

This paper deals with the translation technique of modulation and assess whether, in a given class of modal markers, namely the epistemic verbs, it affects the functional equivalence of the translated text. This translation-oriented analysis was developed from a parallel corpus of informative texts, and want to ascertain to what extent the modulation can alter the expression of the speaker’s voice, by modifying the impact of other agents involved in the communicative act. In addition, the aim of this work is observing if these alterations, beside modifying the textual link existing among the partners and the information to be transmitted, also shift the textual function of the segments in which they are included.
