Abstract

An unwanted guest, a threatening strangeness, illness is one of the events that most overwhelms human existence, making what is perceived as the most familiar, one’s own body, become ominously ‘other’. The aim of the following pages is to argue, through an incursion into the verses of Olvido García Valdés, how the poetic diction of a subject/body estranged by illness becomes equally estranged. Relying on Shklovskian postulates on estrangement and the contributions of phenomenology on corporeality, we will see how the rupture of the Leib’s integrity produced by the pathological reverberates in the disarticulation of expression. If illness is the incursion of the strange/alien into the body, and at the same time, the body itself becoming strange, in the same way the word that names it welcomes other languages and other expressive forms, generating a commixtion by virtue of which its ‘flesh’ is always ‘alter-ed’, derridianly differentiated and deferred.
