Rewriting the Latin American Subject in the Global Era: Alejandra Ghersi/Arca’s Queer Boleros

Abstract

Il contributo indaga il portato teorico della produzione musicale della venezuelana Alejandra Ghersi in arte Arca, ovvero una delle artiste queer più influenti degli anni Dieci del Duemila. La prima parte della ricerca vuole mettere in relazione gli elementi multimediali e performativi del percorso artistico di Arca con alcune figurazioni teorizzate dal pensiero femminista e postumanista contemporaneo (Haraway, Braidotti). La seconda parte analizza diffusamente i testi e i videoclip dell’album Arca (2017) in cui l’autrice, attraverso il dispositivo queer, opera una risemantizzazione di alcune formule musicali nazional-popolari latinoamericane, aprendo uno spazio controdiscorsivo che permette di decostruire il concetto di ‘identità’ latinoamericana e di riflettere sulla possibilità di ridefinizione del ‘soggetto’ latinoamericano nell’epoca della globalizzazione. 

This article investigates the theoretical background of the musical production of the Venezuelan Alejandra Ghersi alias Arca, one of the most influential queer artists of 2010s. The first part of the research aims to relate the multimedial and performative elements of Arca’s artistic career with some figurations theorized by contemporary feminist and posthumanist thinkers (Haraway, Braidotti). The second part of the research analyzes the lyrics and the videos from the 2017 album Arca, in which the author, thanks to the queer device, re-memorises some traditional Latin American music formulas, opening a counter-discursive space that allows to deconstruct the Latin American ‘identity’ concept and to reflect on the possibility of re-defining the Latin American ‘subject’ in the globalization era.
