Abstract

This article proposes a critical reading of a novel by Isaac Rosa, La habitación oscura (2013) and explores how this literary work visualizes and problematizes the social, economic and subjective transformations caused by the 2008 crisis in Spain. Based on the three temporal levels embedded in the plot—the ‘happy’ years of the Spanish economic boom, the massive impact of the neoliberal crisis, and the new resistance movements appeared since then—the article examines the connections established in the novel between a group of friends that reached adulthood at the turn of the century and the diverse values and meanings associated to a dark room where they routinely spend time together (which also informs the Spanish title of the novel, The Dark Room). First, the article interrogates the dialectical relationship between the darkness in the room and the consumerist hedonism that characterized the Spanish youth during the so-called economic ‘bubble’ (the room as a festive space). Second, it discusses the devastating effects of the financial trauma as well as their refraction on the room, emphasizing the precarization of life imposed on the main characters and the biopolitical intensification of contemporary forms of control and surveillance (the room as a refuge). Finally, it evaluates the characters’ re-politicization in parallel to the progressive loss of their labor rights and social conditions (the room as a hiding clandestine center).
