Abstract

Questo articolo, focalizzato sul primo e più celebre romanzo del messicano Federico Campbell, Pretexta (1979), analizza il suo elusivo e ambiguo antagonista: l’anonimo direttore dell’archivio di stato di Tijuana, ambientazione principale della vicenda. Dopo una riflessione sul contesto storico di Pretexta, si mostrerà che questo misterioso sovrintendente rappresenta l’intera casta politica messicana del tempo, responsabile di violente repressioni e censura dei media.

This paper focuses on the first and most famous novel by the Mexican author Federico Campbell, Pretexta (1979), and analyses its elusive and ambiguous antagonist, the unnamed director of Tijuana’s state archive, which is the main setting of this work. After a reflection on the historical context of Pretexta, it will be explained how this mysterious overseer represents the Mexican political caste of that time, responsible for violent repressions and media censorship. Moreover, this article will deal with Pretexta’s main narrator, that can be considered a real ‘unnatural’ element of the novel and, also, he is strictly tied to the forementioned director
