“A Strange Double Image”: the Relationship between the North and the South in Lina Meruane’s Fruta podrida and Sangre en el ojo

Abstract

El artículo explora las formas de representación de los espacios nacionales en Fruta podrida y Sangre en el ojo de Lina Meruane, enfocándose en la relación que las protagonistas de las novelas mantienen con Chile y Estados Unidos. En Fruta podrida, los dos países se oponen en cuanto centro el uno y periferia el otro en el marco de las jerarquías del mundo global; en Sangre en el ojo, en cambio, las distancias entre norte y sur se desdibujan hasta sugerir una superposición entre los dos espacios. También se examina cómo las dos mujeres (de)construyen paulatinamente su identidad nacional y la idea de patria, a través de un ‘nomadismo identitario’ que se escapa de los esencialismos nacionales. Finalmente, se analiza el uso de las variantes del castellano y de otros idiomas en los dos textos, que también intervienen en la creación de una ‘geografía narrativa’ que se mueve entre lo local y lo global.

This article aims to explore the representation of the national spaces in Lina Meruane’s Fruta podrida and Sangre en el ojo, focusing on the connections the two novels’ main characters maintain with Chile and the United States. On one hand, in Fruta podrida the two countries are depicted as opposites, respectively emboding the ‘periphery’ and the ‘centre’ in the global village’s power structure; on the other hand, in Sangre en el ojo the differences between North and South are reduced, alluding to an affinity between Chile and the U.S. Moreover, the article analyses the way the two women (de)construct both their national identity and the homeland connect embracing an ‘identary nomadism’, which refuses national essentialisms. Conclusively, we examine the use of other languages in the novels, as well as that of different varieties of Spanish. This aspect enhances the creation of narrative geography that moves between the local and the global.
