Marginalia excentricorum: Surrealistic Lights and Shades in Uruguay (First Half of the Twentieth Century)

Abstract

La prassi creativa surrealista ha in Uruguay il carattere della solitaria sperimentazione di pochi scrittori che, nella prima metà del Novecento, tentano di ridefinire i contorni dell’io e della realtà dopo il naufragio della ragione agli inizi del secolo. A questi autori, parimenti estranei alla militanza di scuola e ai dettami della cultura egemone, il Surrealismo fornisce gli strumenti per tentare la via di un radicale rinnovamento poetico, oscurato al loro tempo e in attesa, ancor oggi, di una revisione complessiva. È, pertanto, nelle zone d’ombra al margine del canone che bisogna cercare testi che diano spazio alle contraddittorie pulsioni di un io frammentato e adottino sintassi contigue al sogno e al delirio. Ed è qui che nel Paese che aveva dato i natali a Lautréamont, si trovano le poche opere che riecheggiano i modi e i temi cari al Surrealismo.

The Surrealistic creative process in Uruguay is characterized by the solitary experimentation of a few writers who, in the first half of the twentieth century, try to redefine the boundaries of the ego and of reality after the failure of reason at the beginning of the century. Surrealism provides these authors, equally extraneous to official literary movements and the dictates of hegemonic culture, with the instruments to attempt the route of radical poetic renewal obscured in their lifetime and still waiting today for a comprehensive appraisal. It is therefore in the shadows at the limit of the rules that it is necessary to look for written works that give space to the contradictory drives of a fragmented ego and adopt syntax contiguous to dreams and delirium. Moreover, it is here in the country that had given birth to Lautréamont that the few works that echo the manners and the themes dear to Surrealism can be found.
