The first Spanish Printed Translations of Machiavelli’s Il principe: the 1842 Translation

Abstract

El artículo estudia la segunda traducción española editada de Il principe de Maquiavelo (Barcelona, 1842) a través de cuatro niveles: el análisis intertextual, que trata el contexto histórico y literario de la traducción; el análisis de los elementos extratextuales (título, portada, traductor, imprenta y posible original) y del metatexto (prólogo y notas); el análisis macroestructural, que compara la estructura del original con la de la traducción; y el análisis microestructural, que examina las intervenciones del traductor (adiciones, supre­siones, modificaciones y errores). El estudio se completa con otras cuestiones de interés. Del análisis se puede concluir que la traducción obedece al patrón traductológico de la época y respeta la fidelidad a la forma y al contenido del original. 

The goal of this paper is to present a descriptive analysis of the Spanish translation of Machiavelli’s Il principe edited in Barcelona in 1842. We have established different levels of analysis: the intertextual level, which includes the study of the historical and literary context and of the translation’s theory at that time; the extratextual level (title, cover, translator, publisher and source text) and the metatextual level (preface and notes); the macro-level, in which the overall structure of the source text is compared with the structure of the target; and the micro-level, which enables to identify the different types of interventions made by the translator (additions, deletions, modifications and errors). The study is completed by the analysis of other relevant issues. From the analysis we can conclude that this translation belongs to the translations pattern of its period and respects both the form and the content of the source text.
