Weird and Eerie Universes in the Digital Age: an Analysis of Nowadays Ghosts in Three Contemporary Hispanic American Narratives

Abstract

Esta investigación pretende indagar tres obras latinoamericanas ultra-contemporáneas y su relación con las categorías weird y eerie, acuñadas por Mark Fisher. En Videofilia (y otros síndromes virales) (2015), Nefando (2016) y Kentukis (2018), el tema de la red virtual aparece constantemente enlazado con elementos típicos de la ficción especulativa: lo digital se traduce en lo insólito, desnaturalizando la lectura que los personajes tienen de sus respectivos universos. Esas crisis hermenéuticas son las responsables de un orden genérico que se queda a medio camino entre lo meramente mimético y lo fantástico más puro. 

This research aims to investigate three ultra-contemporary Latin American narratives and their relation with the categories of the weird and the eerie, coined by Mark Fisher. In Videophilia (and other viral syndromes) (2015), Nefando (2016) and Kentukis (2018), the web topic appears to be constantly linked with typical elements of speculative fiction: digital devices become the source for the unusual, distorting the perception of the main characters on their respective universes. Those hermeneutical crises provoke a generic order which lingers halfway between the mere mimesis of the real and the properly fantastic.
