Body, materiality and death in Lina Meruane’s Sangre en el ojo and Sistema nervioso

Abstract

El cuerpo con sus enfermedades y padecimientos forma parte de los temas importantes en la narrativa de Line Meruane. En dos de sus textos –Sangre en el ojo y Sistema nervioso–, Meruane mezcla elementos estilísticos novelescos con gestos escriturales autobiográficos, para contar historias del cuerpo. Este se erige como superficie de inscripción de significados múltiples, que se superponen y entretejen, generando al sujeto y su yo como una especie de efecto de la materialidad que lo sostiene. El cuerpo es materia, y como tal vulnerable y sujeto a las amenazas de dolor y de muerte. El cuerpo falla y parece volcarse contra nosotros. El artículo explora, desde las nociones de la monstruosidad y del cortocircuito, las reflexiones que impulsan los textos de Meruane, acerca de la relación imposible que tenemos con nuestro cuerpo, así como las formas enrevesadas en que se vinculan corporalidad y escritura. 

The body with its diseases and sufferings is one of the most important issues addressed by the narrative of Lina Meruane. In two of her texts –Seeing Red and Nervous System–, Meruane mixes stylistic elements of the novel with autobiographic gestures, to tell us stories of the body. The body is shown as an inscription surface with many entangled meanings, generating subject and self as effects of the materiality that sustains them. The body is matter, and therefore vulnerable and exposed to pain and death. The body fails and turns against us. Parting from the notions of monstrosity and short circuit, this article explores the reflections motivated by Meruane’s texts, addressing the impossible relationship we have with our body, and the entangled forms in which corporality and writing are related.
