The word canoa and the dating issue of Antonio de Nebrija’s Spanish-Latin Vocabulary

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es examinar el problema de la datación del Vocabulario español-latino de Antonio de Nebrija, en cuyo colofón no consta fecha, definido por su autor como hermano gemelo de su Diccionario latino-español (1492). La cuestión de la fecha en que se publicó el Vocabulario se halla indisociablemente unida al hecho de que, entre los lemas de éste, se encuentra la palabra canoa, de procedencia americana y ausente en el Diccionario. En estas páginas se demuestra que Nebrija conocía el origen americano de la palabra canoa y se determinan los términos a quo y ad quem que delimitan el período en que pudo publicarse el Vocabulario. Para ello se intentan conciliar los comentarios del autor sobre su vida y sus obras con ciertos acontecimientos históricos del momento y con la historia de la penetración de la mencionada palabra en el español, en otras lenguas europeas y en el latín. Con estos datos, se analizan ciertas interpretaciones equivocadas sobre la fecha del Vocabulario y la historia de la palabra canoa, en especial la de Lugones, pero también se prueba que la publicación del Vocabulario ha de ser anterior a 1495, fecha que se ha generalizado en la bibliografía.

The objective of this article is to examine the dating issue of Antonio de Nebrija’s Spanish-Latin Vocabulary, in whose colophon there is no date, defined by its author as the twin brother of his Latin-Spanish Dictionary (1492). The question of the publication date of the Vocabulary is inextricably linked to the fact that the word canoe, of American origin and absent from the Dictionary, is among one of its entries. In these pages it is shown that Nebrija knew the American origin of the word canoe and the terms a quo and ad quem are established, delimiting the period in which the Vocabulary could have been published. This means bringing together the author’s comments on his life and works with some historical events of the time and the history of the inclusion of the above-mentioned word in Spanish, as well as in other European languages and Latin. With these data, several misinterpretations about the date of the Vocabulary and the history of the word canoe, especially that of Lugones, are analyzed. It is also proved that the publication of the Vocabulary must be prior to 1495, a date that has become widespread in the bibliography.
