Rafael Alberti in Matera: an Exhibition and a Poetry Reading Long Forgotten (1973)

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza las circunstancias que llevaron a Rafael Alberti a Matera, sur de Italia, en abril de 1973. Para la ocasión, el poeta-pintor realizó una liricografía, “Vivo fantasma”, que se conserva en la Galleria Studio Arti Visive de la ciudad italiana. Su propietario custodia asimismo las tres cartas que Alberti le envió durante el proceso de preparación de la exposición y del recital poético que se ofrecieron en Matera, documentos inéditos cuyo contenido se da a conocer en estas páginas. En ellas se incluyen también algunos apuntes sobre la mencionada liricografía y sobre la relación personal y profesional que Alberti mantuvo con el pintor José Ortega, exiliado republicano que se hallaba en la ciudad italiana en esas fechas.  

This paper analyzes the circumstances that brought Rafael Alberti to Matera, in the South of Italy, in April 1973. For the occasion, the poet-painter created a liricografía, “Vivo fantasma”, which is stored in the Studio Arti Visive Gallery in the Italian town. In addition, the owner of the Gallery preservered the three letters that Alberti sent him during the preparation of the exhibition and the poetry reading that were offered in Matera. The content of these unpublished documents is brought to light in these pages. They also include some notes on the aforementioned liricografía and on the personal and professional relationship that Alberti had with the painter José Ortega, a Republican exile who was in the Italian city at that time.
