Effects of the Monstruous and possible Analysis of Current Latinamerican Short Fiction

Abstract

Los horrores y anhelos del ser humano conviven, hermanados, en una dualidad inseparable: aquella a la que aboca lo monstruoso. Ora realista, ora insólito, dicha figura encarna todo ápice de inquietud física o psíquica, individual o social, hecho que repercute en el individuo, poniendo en jaque cada una de sus certezas; incluida aquella por la que puede llegar a considerar al monstruo objeto de fascinación a pesar de la repugnancia, del miedo, de la aversión que transmite. Este trabajo no solo incide en esta reflexión, sino que expone los diferentes terrores humanos en un ejercicio de compilación bibliográfica, que anima a repensar el surgimiento de dichos miedos y la continua presencia de su amenaza. Se incluyen, seguidamente, diferentes vías de análisis que responden al ejercicio de disección de dichos miedos a través de ejemplos concretos en la narrativa breve actual hispánica, contextualizados todos ellos en las ficciones de imaginación relativas a las categorías estéticas de lo fantástico y de lo inusual. El objetivo que se persigue con dicha disección es incidir en el carácter interdisciplinar de dicho motivo, pues la riqueza interpretativa de lo monstruoso dilata sus infinitos semas, susceptibles de ser examinados desde perspectivas filosóficas, psicoanalíticas, afectivas, biopolíticas, religiosas, o desde otras vertientes como las que señalan todo tipo de crisis económicas y migratorias, o las que inciden en lecturas vinculadas a lo ecológico, lo tecnológico y el género.

The horrors and desires of the human being coexist, intertwined, in an inseparable duality: one that is inevitably drawn to the monstrous. At times realistic, at times extraordinary, this figure embodies every trace of physical or psychological unease, whether individual or social—an aspect that inevitably affects the subject, challenging their every certainty, including the very notion that the monster may be an object of fascination despite the repulsion, fear, and aversion it evokes. This study not only delves into this reflection but also presents an exploration of different human terrors through a bibliographic compilation, encouraging a reconsideration of the origins of these fears and the persistent presence of their threat. Subsequently, various analytical approaches are introduced, offering a dissection of these fears through concrete examples in contemporary Hispanic short fiction, all of which are contextualized within non-realistic narratives that correspond to the aesthetic categories of the fantastic and the unusual. The main objective of this dissection is to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of this motif, as the interpretative richness of the monstrous expands its infinite semantic possibilities. These are subject to examination from philosophical, psychoanalytic, affective, and biopolitical perspectives, as well as through other lenses, such as those that address economic and migratory crises, or those that engage with ecological, technological, and gender-related readings.
